Bemidji swimmers in position to make state run

The Bemidji boys swimmers and divers are in position to send two relays and a handful of swimmers to the state meet following Friday's preliminary round of the Section 3A meet in Willmar.

In Friday's action the 200 free relay unit of Adam Falk, Nick Gubbels, Tyler Hemp and Dylan Hoven finished second in a time of 1:32.28 and the group will be among Friday's top eight finishers who will battle today for the four available state tournament berths.

The same group was fifth in the 400 free relay (3:30.08) and also qualified for today's championship heat.

Individually BHS saw Adam Falk and Nick Nyberg qualify for the championship round in the 200 free as Falk was third in Friday's preliminaries (1:52.28) and Nyberg placed fourth (1:53.24).

Nyberg also won Friday's 500 free (5:12.41) and will be the top seed in today's championship flight.

Hoven enters today's 50 free as the top seed as he won Friday's race in 22.23. Tommy Payne of Montevideo was second in 22.56. Hoven also will be the second seed in today's 100 free as he compiled a time of 50.27 Friday.

Falk finished ninth in the 100 fly and failed to make it into today's championship flight (top eight). His time of 57.30, however, bettered the state qualification time and if he duplicates that effort today Falk will earn a trip to state even though he swam in the consolation heat.

"The top 10 finishers in the 100 fly in Friday's preliminaries also swam under the state cut," said BHS coach Woody Leindecker. "This is a very fast field."

Finishing between ninth and 16th Friday and swimming in today's consolation bracket are the 200 medley relay team of Hemp, Matt Arndt, Eli Wright and Seth Olson (1:57.12), Gubbels in the 50 free (25.31) and 100 free (53.76), Falk in the 100 fly, Pat Voss in the 500 free (5:35.95), Wright in the 500 free (5:36.03) and Seth Olson in the 100 breast stroke (1:09.23).
