Bemidji HS girls hockey team starts fast in loss to Cloquet

Bemidji scored twice in the opening period but Cloquet -Esko-Carlton struck for three goals in the middle stanza and hung on for a 3-2 victory over the Lumberjacks girls hockey team Tuesday in Cloquet.

"We played well in the first period but we played horribly in the second," said BHS coach Matt Menne. "We tried to come back in the third but we couldn't convert our chances."

Casey Miller and Amanda Hunt scored for the Lumberjacks in the opening period to and Laura Thompson made eight saves to give Bemidji a 2-0 lead after 17 minutues.

Janie Johnson and Becca Gregg assisted on Miller's power-play tally while Megan Phelps set up Hunt who scored through a screen from the blue line.

The home team, however, scored a shorthanded tally 2:32 into the second period and tied the game with a power-play goal at 10:29.

Cloquet took the lead when Dalyce Gustafson scored at 13:44 and the home team maintained the 3-2 advantage the rest of the period.

The Lumberjacks continually attacked in the final stanza and sent 12 shots at Cloquet goalie Katie Beckman. But the sophomore held her ground and kept BHS off the board.

"It's always a one-goal game when we play Cloquet," Menne said. "Our problem was that we didn't play 51 minutes. If you play 45 minutes instead of 51 minutes against some of the teams on our schedule and some of the teams we will face in the playoffs, you will lose. And Cloquet is one of those teams."
