Power plays plague Bemidji girls hockey team in 5-1 loss

Fergus Falls connected on four of its nine power play opportunities and those player-advantage situations proved to be the difference as the Otters stopped the Bemidji girls hockey team 5-1 Saturday in Fergus Falls.

The home team took a 1-0 lead late in the opening stanza with the first of its four power-play goals. BHS, however, evened the score 23 seconds later as Chaniel Nelson found an opening in the slot and completed a play which included assists by Karleigh Wolkerstorfer and Allie Lapp.

The Lumberjacks outshot the Otters 24-20 but could not find the scoreboard again.

Fergus Falls, however, scored a pair of goals in each of the final two stanzas, three of them coming on the power play.

Bemidji was whistled for 10 minors while the Otters had three penalties, two of them coming late in the game.

"The officiating was a factor," said BHS coach Matt Menne. "It didn't lose us the game because we scored only one goal but it made a difference."

Meg Phelps made her debut in the Bemidji net and finished with 15 saves. Bemidji fired 24 shots at Otter goalie Karlee Werre.

The loss dropped the Lumberjacks to 5-10-1. Bemidji returns to action Tuesday when it invades Moorhead.
