Jacks wrestlers bounce back to win second match at Hibbing tournament

After losing a heartbreaking 41-39 match to Chisago Lakes in the opening round of the Hibbing Invitational Friday afternoon the Bemidji wrestling squad thumped Virginia 48-34 in the loser's bracket round.

Today the Lumberjacks will conclude the tournament by facing Deer River at 11 a.m. and Nashwauk at 2:30 p.m.

BHS led Chisago Lakes 39-29 heading into the final two matches but Chisago Lakes won both of them by pins to claim the meet win.

Earlier in the action Chisago Lakes managed to claim a few other matches that could have gone either way.

"A couple of matches we thought might go our way didn't but I thought our kids wrestled very well," said Jacks coach Rance Bahr. "It was a fun match to be part of."

Bemidji's individual victories were courtesy of Brian Maas at 112, Logan Crosby at 119, Ryle Masterson at 130, Craig Maas at 135, Colton Doty at 145, Kade Johnson at 152 and Brenden Fredricksen at 189.

Against Virginia the Lumberjacks won all but four of the contested matches. In order to preserve varsity matches later in the season and with the victory in hand, Bemidji forfeited at two weights and both teams forfeited at 215.

Tyler O'Bierne won at 103 as did Masterson at 125, Dylan Hardy at 135 and Dustin Greenman at 160.
