Bemidji HS boys hockey team loses first game of the season to Cloquet

The unbeaten streak of the Bemidji boys hockey team came to an end Tuesday as the Lumberjacks lost 4-3 to Cloquet-Esko-Carlton in the opening round of the Duluth Invitational.

BHS had opened the winter with a 7-0-1 record but CEC road the strength of a 2-goal second period to hand the Lumberjacks their first loss of the year.

"We were flat. We didn't have much jump," said BHS coach Wade Chiodo. "For the first two periods we didn't have any jam and we were waiting for the play to come to us."

The Jacks struck first Tuesday when Jordan Heller converted feeds from Steven Heller and Tyler Follis 3:21 into the initial stanza.

CEC drew even at 13:20 when Jack McFarlane beat BHS goaltender Jeremiah Graves.

The 1-1 deadlock continued into the middle period but CEC took control with two unanswered goals. Adam Hanson connected at 1:06 of the session and Joey Singpiel tallied a power play goal at 9:24.

John Forseth cut Bemidji's deficit to 3-2 seven minutes into the final period but Nolan Meyer regained the two-goal lead for CEC with a goal at 13:27.

Max Hazelton ended the scoring at 15:57.

"In the last seven minutes of the game we picked it up a notch but until then it looked like we hadn't played in awhile," Chiodo said. "You have to make your own breaks if you want to win and we weren't doing that. I think the layoff hurt us."

Tuesday's loss dropped Bemidji into today's consolation round and a noon match-up against Andover which fell to Forest Lake Tuesday afternoon.
