Jacks take third at Albert Lea

Tuesday's six-hour bus ride to Bemidji from southern Minnesota didn't seem to last too long as the Bemidji girls basketball team hit the road following a 63-45 victory over the host team in the third-place game of the Albert Lea Invitational.

The victory gave Bemidji a 1-1 record at the tournament and upped the Lumberjacks' overall mark to 3-5.

"There were smiles on the girls' faces after the game," said BHS coach Rick Kehoe. "Win or lose, when you play well it feels good. When you do things correctly success will follow and we're slowly recognizing the right way to do things on the basketball court."

That recognition helped the Jacks dismantle Albert Lea's press and the ability to break the press was key to the victory.

"We started out one-for-eight from the field and I was thinking that we were going to have another tough day of shooting," Kehoe said. "But then we figured out how to beat the press and when we did we scored some easy baskets.

"Those easy baskets produced a snowball effect and all of a sudden the hoop looked a lot bigger."

By intermission Bemidji had forged a 38-25 advantage and the Jacks let their defense take over in the second stanza.

"We limited Albert Lea's offense to 20 points in the second half," Kehoe said.

Jess Yost paced Bemidji's attack as the sophomore scored 25 points.

"Jess worked her tail off and many of her points came when we beat the press," Kehoe said. "She also rebounded very well and had an overall great game."

Jenna Sagedahl contributed nine points and Greta Steever eight.

BHS is off until Jan. 6 when it heads to Detroit Lakes.
