Bemidji HS girls hockey team ties Brainerd/Little Falls

Karleigh Wolkerstorfer scored her second goal of the game 14:31 into the third period to help the Bemidji girls hockey team rally for a 4-4 overtime tie Saturday afternoon against Brainerd-Little Falls in Brainerd.

The Flying Warriors had battled back from a 3-1 deficit and took a 4-3 lead at 14:22 when Hailey Joyce scored. BHS, however, promptly answered as Amanda Hunt set up Wolkerstorfer for the tying tally.

Neither team could find the net during the final two minutes of regulation or the 8-minute overtime.

"After Brainerd took the lead I heard the girls on the bench say, 'Okay, here we go. Let's get it back.' And nine seconds later they did," said BHS coach Matt Menne. "On paper this team is supposed to be better than us but in the first period we put the screws to them.

"We didn't get the win but we got a tie and next time we play them we'll get to be at home," the coach continued.

The Lumberjacks dominated the first period, outshooting B-LF 17-6 and bolting to a 3-1 lead.

Wolkerstorfer opened the scoring at 2:15 and, after the home team drew even at 4:37, the Jacks erupted for two goals in the period's final 2:10.

Allie Lapp batted home a rebound at 14:50 and Karlee Tower found the net at 15:32. Chaniel Nelson and Hanna Olson assisted on Lapp's tally while Erin Booth set up Tower's goal.

B-LF collected the lone goal of the middle session and took the lead with goals 11:16 and 14:22 into the third period.

Bemidji, however, responded as Wolkerstorfer caught a puck in midair at the B-LF blue line, dropped it to her skates, beat two defenders and fired a shot past the goalie.

Laura Thompson stopped 21 shots in the BHS net, including a couple that saved the game.

"Laura had one or two great saves and took a couple of goals away from Brainerd," Menne said. "And offensively we got some hard-working goals."

Bemidji improved to 3-9-1 while Brainerd-Little Falls is 6-1-2. The Lumberjacks return to duty Tuesday at International Falls.
