Buffalo downs Bemidji girls hockey team 4-2

Buffalo broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the final five seconds of the second period and erupted for three in the final stanza to down the Bemidji High School girls hockey team 4-2 Friday in Buffalo.

BHS scored both of its goals in the third period as Allie Lapp connected unassisted 55 seconds into the stanza and she scored again at 13:44. Karleigh Wolkerstorfer and Casey Miller drew assists on the second tally.

"The kids played well and they battled the entire game," said BHS coach Mat Menne. "It was back and forth and both teams played good hockey."

The difference was a pair of tip-in goals that Buffalo scored within a 24-second span midway through the third period. Katie Vatnsdal was credited with both goals as the sophomore was able to gain position in front of the net and tip home shots from the blue line.

"In girls hockey you don't see many goals coming from the point but in each of our three games we've given up at least two goals from there," Menne said. "We have to improve in that area. The players have to go down and block some shots and the defense has to move people wide so our goalie can see the puck."

Emily Denzer handled Bemidji's goaltending duties and finished with 11 saves. Haley Morningstar stopped 17 shots in the Buffalo net.

"The kids battled extremely hard and we continue to see improvement," Menne said. "We'll keep plugging away."
