Hirt could miss entire senior year

The high school sports career of Kayla Hirt appears to be over as the Bemidji senior is expected to undergo reconstructive surgery on her left knee Sept. 23.

Hirt, who injured the knee during AAU basketball late in the summer, visited a pair of specialists earlier this month. The doctors in Fargo, after examining the MRI, felt the anterior cruciate ligament was completely torn.

Their counterparts at the University of Minnesota believed the tear was probably partial but both doctors recommended surgery.

"My goal is to play basketball at the University of Minnesota and beyond. I believe surgery now is the right thing to do," Hirt said.

The BHS senior will begin rehabilitating the knee a few weeks after the surgery and expects to be 100 percent by next fall.
