State berths on the line for Bemidji HS track and field Saturday

State meet berths will be on the line today when the Bemidji boys and girls track and field teams join their 8AA peers at the second day of the section competition in Brainerd.

On Tuesday Selina Gilbertson qualified for the state meet in the girls discus as she captured the section title with a person-best throw of 122-11. Gilbertson will try to qualify for state in a second event today when she competes in the shot put along with teammates Allie Heifort and Callie Johnson.

The Lumberjacks girls team had a pair of athletes gain today's finals after doing well in Wednesday's preliminaries. Bailey Drewes reached the final in the 800 after finishing sixth Wednesday and Abby Hendricks will compete in the 300 hurdles as a reward of her ninth-place preliminary time.

Today's events in the girls division are the 100, 200, 400, 1600, 100 hurdles, 400 relay, 800 relay, 1600 relay, 3200 relay, pole vault, triple jump and shot put.

In the boys division, Alex Schoneberger will be among the favorites in the 800 following his winning performance in Wednesday's preliminaries. Matt Lee also could challenge for a state berth as he was fifth in the preliminaries.

The Lumberjacks had a pair of other runners advance to the finals, Ryan Rude who was eighth in the 100 and Peter Humeniuk who was fifth in the 400.

Bemidji did not qualify anyone for the finals in the 200, 3200, 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, pole vault, long jump and shot put.

Up for grabs during today's schedule, however, are state berths in the 1600, 400 relay, 800 relay, 1600 relay, 3200 relay, high jump, triple jump and discus.
