The baseball season at Bemidji High School came to a close Monday with 13 wins in 21 games as the Lumberjacks lost 4-3 to Moorhead in second-round action of the Section 8AAA tournament in Moorhead.

BHS, which was seeded sixth, won its opener Monday, blitzing No. 11 Apollo 8-1. That victory vaulted the Lumberjacks into the second round and a test against third-seeded Moorhead, a team which thumped Bemidji 10-2 last Thursday in Bemidji.

BHS stayed with the Spuds the entire way Monday but a pair of long balls proved to be the difference. In the first inning Tyler Larson blasted a 3-run round-tripper to give the Spuds a 3-1 lead and Cole Honl's solo shot over the center field fence in the fourth proved to be the game-winnner.

The Lumberjacks opened the scoring in the first inning as Mitch Hendricks was hit by a pitch, stole second, gained third on Collin Leif's bunt and scored courtesy of Tyler Follis' single.

Moorhead, however, used the home runs to forge a 4-1 cushion after four innings.

BHS took advantage of wildness on the part of Larson and reliever Kyle Kraemer to draw within 4-3 in the upper fifth.

Walks to Jeremiah Graves and Hendricks opened the frame and Leif's single loaded the bases. Follis plated one run with a ground ball and, after Cody Rutledge walked, Tyler Tatro forced home Hendricks when he was hit by a pitch.

Follis was the losing pitcher, working 4.1 innings. Zach Solheim relieved in the fifth and went the rest of the way.

Rutledge collected a pair of singles to lead the offense. Follis contributed two RBI and Hendricks scored two runs.

Bemidji 8, Apollo 1

Bemidji advanced to the rematch with Moorhead by thumping St. Cloud Apollo 8-1 in Monday's first round.

BHS scored three in the third and four in the fourth to cement the victory and set the stage for the game against Moorhead.

Apollo (6-15) opened the scoring as Matt Korte singled to begin the game and, two outs later, Austin Hougen singled.

Bemidji's 1-0 deficit continued until the third when the Jacks began to take control.

Hendricks singled to open the inning and Leif followed with a walk. After Follis flew to center and Rutledge was retired on a ground ball, Matt Hietala singled in Henndricks.

Another walk loaded the bases and two runs scored when Mason Bellew ripped a double to the left-center field gap.

The Lumberjacks ended all suspense with four runs in the fourth. With one out Hendricks walked and Leif singled. An out later Rutledge plated Hendricks with a single and an error on Hietala's grounder to third scored Cole Bardwell who was pinch-running for Leif.

Tatro drove in Rutledge with a single and Bellew capped the stanza with an RBI single to left.

Bemidji closed the scoring with one in the sixth on singles by Rutledge, Hietala and Bellew.

Ryan Stevens went the distance on the BHS mound. The junior struck out six and walked one while improving to 5-0.

Bellew paced the offense with a double and three singles in four at-bats. He also contributed four RBI.
