Bemidji HS softball team wins opener with offense
A busy stretch of the season which sees the Bemidji softball team playing six games in three days continued Friday as the Lumberjacks split a home doubleheader with Fargo North. BHS took the opener 10-5 but dropped the second game 8-3.
Friday's contests were originally scheduled for last Tuesday in Fargo but rain postponed the games to Friday and team officials decided that Bemidji would be the setting.
Thursday night the Jacks outlasted Thief River Falls 9-6 in the mud and the rain and today BHS heads to Cloquet for a six-team tournament.
Bemidji will tangle with Ogilvie at 11 a.m. and Chanhassen at 1 p.m. The other bracket includes Chaska, Barnum and Cloquet. At 3 p.m. the teams will cross brackets to determine a champion, third-place finisher and fifth-place team.
The opening-game win was fueled by the offense provided by Jess Yost who had a double, two singles and four RBI. Chelsea Johnson added a pair of hits and an RBI.
Fargo North took a 1-0 lead in the upper first but BHS countered with five in its half of the stanza.
Summer Monsrud opened the inning with a walk and she gained third when Jineane Williams' fly ball was dropped. After Williams stole second Yost singled to left to plate Monsrud and Williams also scored when the ball was bobbled. Janelle Williams reached when Fargo North botched her fielder's choice grounder and Emily Larson followed with a 2-run single.
After Mikayla Dahlin singled, Chelsea Johnson plated Larson with a single to center.
The Jacks used a walk, passed ball and Yost's single to score in the second and, after Fargo North drew within 6-4 in the third, the home team settled the issue with four in the fourth.
The inning began with singles by Janie Johnson and Jineane Williams, Yost's 2-run double, Janelle Williams' RBI triple and Larson's run-scoring groundout.
Taylor McLean went the distance on the mound to post the victory. The junior struck out one and walked one.
The rematch went to Fargo North as the visitors broke a 3-3 stalemate with five runs in the top of the seventh.
Bemidji scored solo runs in the second, fourth and fifth while the visitors matched those runs in the first, third and fifth.
In the seventh, however, Fargo North bunched an error, three doubles, a pair of singles and a walk into the five runs.
Janelle Williams' double and Chelsea Johnson's groundout produced a BHS run in the second and another double by Janelle Williams, a grounder, a walk to Chelsea Johnson and a double steal combined for a run in the fourth.
Bemidji scored its other run in the fifth as Laura Clark singled, Jasmine Yerbich pinch ran, Dahlin singled and Yerbich scored on an errant throw.
