Bemidji HS Friday roundup: Rain causes delay, but girls golf team plays on for third place finish

The weather was the big winner Friday although the Bemidji girls golf team was able to conduct its annual tournament at the Bemidji Town & Country Club.

The rain forced postponement of a pair of home events, the softball game against Grand Forks Central and the baseball doubleheader against Alexandria.

Also postponed was the track and field meet at Brainerd. That competition has been rescheduled for Tuesday.

The softball game will not be made up while the baseball doubleheader will be played May 14. Originally the Lumberjacks were scheduled to host Grand Forks Central that day.

Girls golf

Bemidji hosted 15 teams during Friday's girls golf invitational and the athletes were forced to play through rain for at least half of the round.

The unpleasant conditions led to relatively high scores. Grand Rapids won the meet with 353 and Roseau was second at 356. Bemidji's varsity squad was third at 381 while Bemidji's JV was last in the field at 474.

Rounding out the top five were Fosston and Detroit Lakes, both at 383.

Emily Hallie of Roseau was the meet medalist as she shot 81. Valeria Manacke of Fosston, Mikki Kromy of Grand Rapids and Beth Annoni of Hill-Murray tied for second at 84.

Bemidji's Emily Frosaker shot an 86 and tied for fifth with Jill Sampair of Hill-Murray.

The Lumberjacks had one other player break 100, Shelby Sauer who shot 91. Amy Frosaker carded a 100, Marissa Loch 104, Erin Buckanaga 110 and Aimee Sandquist 113.

The JV individual scores included Katlyn Kraft's 112, Rachel Carduff's 112, Alyssa Johnson's 120, Lauren Lund's 131, Katie Sandquist's 133 and Megan Anderson's 134.

Today's schedule

Today's schedule sees the girls golfers at Pokegama in Grand Rapids and the boys golf team at Greystone in Sauk Rapids. Both squads, however, will bring a mix of varsity and junior varsity athletes because the school is celebrating prom tonight.

Monday the girls squad will be at Park Rapids.

"Greystone is the site of our section meet so we wanted to play a round there," said BHS coach Eric Niskanen. "The kids will come back later this spring for a practice round and we may try to schedule a dual against Moorhead at Greystone sometime this month."

Representing the Lumberjacks will be Joe Welle, Kaleb Hanson, Garret Janiksela, Jordan Manick, Trey Dale and Jake Hoffman.

"Greystone is a tricky course and you have to get accustomed to it," Niskanen said. "It is mostly open and when the wind blows at Greystone it affects the shots."
