Larson, Welle lead Jacks golf team to win

Prior to Friday's season-opening meet for the Bemidji boys golfers at Blueberry Pines coach Eric Niskanen thought the Lumberjacks could have a few rounds in the 70s.

Kevin Larson and Joe Welle proved him right as they tied for third with 77s and helped the Jacks capture the team title.

Bemidji finished at 319 and edged Roseau which fired 320. Grand Rapids shot 329 and Warroad 351.

"Before the meet I tried to figure out what we would shoot and, when you consider the problems caused by the steady wind, many of the players shot as I anticipated," Niskanen said. "Friday was a positive start for most of the guys."

Shane Omdahl and Jordan Radcliffe, both of Roseau, tied for medalist honors with 76s.

Larson shot 38-39-77 and Welle 41-36-77 on the 36-36-72 layout.

Rylee Curb finished 42-39-81, Trey Dale shot 40-44-84, Kaleb Hanson fired a 45-44-89 and Jake Hoffman shot 46-43-89.

"A new rule this year allows coaches to walk with their golfers as far as the green and I did that today," Niskanen said. "It seemed to help some of them as a couple of guys turned their scores around on the back."

The Jacks return to action Thursday at Alexandria and will be at the Preserve and the Pines on Friday and Saturday.

"This was a positive start for most of the guys," Niskanen said. "Golf is a constant search and the 89s have to cover a little wider search area. But, overall, we played well."
