Bemidji HS girls hockey team wins key section game

Bemidji opened play at the Andover Invitational Tuesday night with a 4-3 win over North Wright County in the final game of the day.

It took the ice after 9 p.m. The loss was the first for Wright County which fell to 10-1-2. Bemidji upped its record to 11-2.

Casey Miller broke a 3-3 tie midway in the third period and Bemidji made the lead stand up the rest of the way.

Bemidji out shot the River Hawks 19-14 but held a wider margin of controlling play through the contest.

All three Wright County goals came on shots from the point, two on power plays, with one deflected past Maria Thompson by a Wright County skater and another deflecting off a Bemidji skate into the net.

Thompson ended with 11 stops. Amanda Koep had 15 for the losers.

Bemidji trailed 1-0 early on an Ali Olson tally. Bemidji matched that score before the first period ended when Janie registered her fourth goal off feeds from Miller and Amanda Hunt.

Karleigh Wolkerstorfer and Shelby Sauer gave Bemidji a 3-1 lead in the second period.

But Alli Heifort and Allie Lapp drew penalties late in the stanza and Casey Blomberg connected on the 5 on 3 situation to slice the deficit to a single goal.

Sauer was gone for interference in the third period when Samantha Pitts tied the score with a power play goal.

But four minutes later Miller converted feeds from Johnson and Emily Larson to score the winner.

"It was a hard fought contest all the way," said Coach Matt Menne, "between two physical teams. We were in firm control when we took the 3-1 led but lost in on poor power play killing, something that has been a strong suit for us most of the year.,"

Wright County hit 2-5 on the power play, Bemidji had only two chances and failed to connect.
