Bemidji HS girls soccer falls to Crookston

The Crookston Pirates took advantage of their limited scoring chances to hand Bemidji's girls soccer team a 2-0 setback Thursday at the Middle School.

It dropped Bemidji to 3-2 on the year and 2-1 in the Lakes to Prairie Conference. The two teams meet again at Crookston Oct. 5.

Crookston came to town with an 0-4 mark though both had lost to Moorhead by identical 4-2 scores in their only games with a common opponent.

But Bemidji made hard work of a game it might have won by several goals.

It fired 30 shots during the contest but put only 11 on goal and missed numerous scoring opportunities.

Crookston fired 21, 12 on target, but only the two scores were successful.

The first was a gift.

Goalie Nicole Ramos ranged far out from the net to stop a long range shot. Rather than pick up the ball she tried to kick it away.

Her partially missed kick traveled only 10 yards and went directly to Tori Rhode who had nothing between herself and a wide open net and buried the ball.

Six minutes later, Shannon Kaiser beat the Bemidji defense down the left sideline to bury a 20 yard bullet into the upper right corner.

It was one of several uncontested shots by Crookston whose quick forwards gave the Bemidji defenders problems all day.

But, in the long run, the home team was its own worst enemy.

It put a half dozen open shots directly into goalie Kristin Remick's midsection and missed the net on as many others.

And time after time, it passed up promising opportunities to make one extra pass which usually resulted in no shot being taken .

Ramos ended with 10 stops. Remick had 11

Bemidji will have little time to recover heading to St. Cloud tomorrow for its annual battles with Tech and Buffalo. Moorhead will meet the same two teams in reverse order.
