Swimming: Hemp, medley relay advance to consolation finals
MINNEAPOLIS — Tyler Hemp placed ninth in Friday’s 100 breast stroke preliminary race and will return to the University of Minnesota pool noon Saturday for the consolation championship race of the Class A meet.
Joining Hemp at the pool on Saturday will be his medley relay teammates Nate Gubbels, Matt Arndt and Wyatt Yartz. That foursome finished 13th in Friday’s preliminaries and will also swim in Saturday’s consolation race.
Bemidji also will be represented Saturday by senior diver Sam Howard who enters the finals in third place with 251.65 points.
Howard trails Brandon Pearson of Breck-Blake (274.50) and Mathew Bethke of Sauk Rapids (261.35). Pearson appears to have a solid lead but behind him are eight divers within 20 points so the chase is on for second through ninth places.
Hemp hoped to reach the medal round in his individual events and he missed accomplishing that feat by a fraction of a second in the breast stroke. The top eight finishers in the preliminary race advance to Saturday’s championship and Hemp was in a heated chase for the final two spots.
Hemp finished in 1:00.52 while Riley Fairbanks of Hutchinson was eighth in 1:00.42. Earning the seventh spot was Michael Richter of Detroit Lakes who was clocked in 1:00.39.
In the 200 individual medley Hemp was 19th in 2:09.02. The eighth-place finisher completed the race in 2:03.40 and Davin Sang of Spring Lake Park was 16th in 2:07.35.
The medley relay squad finished in 1:43.99 and was three seconds away from qualifying for Saturday’s championship heat.
