Lumberjacks wrestling: Maas, Johnson advance to state meet

SARTELL — Brian Maas and Kade Johnson are headed back to the state Class 3A wrestling meet as the Bemidji athletes dominated their weight classes and claimed individual championships Saturday at the Section 8-3A meet in Sartell.

The Lumberjacks also came close to advancing wrestlers to state in three other weight classes but Dylon Sauceda, Robert Treuer and Brody Wilander all lost True Second matches and fell just short of advancing to the Twin Cities.

“We had a very good tournament,” said BHS coach Rance Bahr. “We certainly would have liked to get a few more wrestlers to state but we wrestled very well. It was a good weekend.”

Maas posted a pair of convincing victories Saturday as he pinned Adam Johnson of Alexandria in the 113-pound semifinals and battered Austin Brenner of St. Cloud Tech 10-1 in the title bout.

Maas will take a 39-0 record into the state meet which begins Friday morning. He also is ranked No.1 in the state in his weight class.

Johnson entered the section meet seeded No. 1 in Section 8-3A and No. 3 in the state at 182 pounds. And the senior lived up to that billing as he cruised to his title. On Friday he opened the section competition with a first-period pin and on Saturday he blistered Nick Graham of St. Cloud Apollo 21-4 and pinned Mike Schluter of Alexandria in 1:17 to claim his crown.

Johnson is 40-0 this winter and has won 37 of his matches with pins.

Sauceda dropped his first 132-pound match on Saturday but won his next two to qualify for the True Second bout. Sauceda and Trent Piepenburg of Alexandria entered the third period of that battle tied 2-2 and Sauceda allowed an escape to open the final stanza. But Sauceda was unable to gain the takedown during the next two minutes and lost the match 3-2.

At 138 Treuer had a similar heart-breaking result as he lost 2-1 to Jonathan Pelach of Sartell. After taking the lead with an escape Treuer yielded a point because of stalling in the second period and during the final stanza Pelach managed an escape to claim the winning point.

Wilander also advanced to the True Second match at 195 pounds and lost 16-6 to Blake Keske of Sauk Rapids.

Also finishing third were Gannon Strain at 152 and Nick Peterson at 170. Placing fifth were Tyler O’Beirne at 126, Wyatt Yoemans at 220 and heavyweight Gabe Flaherty while Alex O’Neal was sixth at 145.
