WRESTLING: Bemidji advances eight to section semifinals

SARTELL — Kade Johnson and Brian Maas earned No. 1 seeds in the Section 8-3A individual wrestling tournament and both Bemidji wrestlers advanced to Saturday’s semifinals.

Johnson (38-0) earned his spot with a first-period pin of Jesse Roach of Little Falls. In today’s semifinals Johnson will tangle with Nick Graham of St. Cloud Apollo (20-16) who stopped Chris Laber of Brainerd in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Maas (37-0) had a quarterfinal bye Friday and automatically advanced to today’s semifinals where he will face Ethan Tallakson (23-16) of Moorhead.

The other Lumberjacks who gained the semifinals are Dylon Sauceda (132), Robert Treuer (138), Gannon Strain (152), Hunter Schoenborn (160), Nick Peterson (170) and Brody Wilander (195).

“We have 13 of our 14 kids still wrestling and eight kids in the championship semifinals,” said BHS coach Rance Bahr. “That is a good first day of the section meet.

“Overall, the effort by the kids was there and we have the momentum going into the second day.”

Sauceda gained today’s semifinals with a 12-2 major decision over A.J.Jenks of Little Falls. Treuer advanced with a 2-1 victory over Henry Nistler of St. Cloud Tech and Strain coasted to the semifinals after thumping Tyler Snoberger of Sartell 9-2.

Schoenborn posted a 5-2 decision over Alex Van Heel of St. Cloud Tech and Peterson pinned Cole Desrosier of Brainerd in just under four minutes.

Wilander also advanced courtesy of a pin as he stopped Ben Lien of Moorhead in 49 seconds.

Still alive in the consolation round are Indi Farris at 120, Tyler O’Beirne at 126, Alex O’Neal at 145, Wyatt Yoemans at 220 and Gabe Flaherty at heavyweight.

“In the section format you can still come through the consolation rounds and finish second,” Bahr said. “And we have high expectations.”

Today’s action begins at 11 a.m. with the championship semifinals and the consolation quarterfinals. The consolation semifinals are scheduled for 1 p.m. and the fifth and sixth-place matches will begin at 2 p.m.

The finals are set for 3 p.m. and if any true second matches are required, they will begin around 5 p.m.
