BHS baseball: Brainerd deals Jacks 11-3 setback

The Brainerd Warriors took advantage of Bemidji mistakes Saturday to hand the Jacks baseball team an 11-3 setback at the Arena diamond.

It left Brainerd unbeaten in three starts and dropped the Jacks to 4-2.

They are back in action Monday night at Grand Forks facing Mark Varriano's Red River Roughriders. They host Detroit Lakes Thursday and face Eagan and Eden Prairie at Grand Rapids Saturday.

Facing their third game in 28 hours, the Jacks were far from sharp. And Brainerd took advantage of its opportunities.

Bemidji was still close at 4-3 after four frames before the visitors scored four times in the fifth and three in the seventh to draw away.

Joel Martin and Kyle Crocker combined on an eight hitter, fanning four but walking eight to give Bemidji opportunities.

Three Jacks pitchers dished up seven free passes to go with10 hits.

Brainerd scored a gift run in the first when first base was left uncovered to allow Crocker to beat out his grounder to first.

He reached third on a steal and Rob Veith's single and scored on a wild pitch.

It becane 2-0 in the second when another grouder to first gave Tom Fairbanks first base when pitcher Josh Kane missed the bag with his foot.

Again a steal and Dan Janousek's single plated him.

Kane walked the bases loaded in the fourth and two wild pitches scored two for a 4-0 lead.

But Bemidji fought back with three in the fourth to draw within one.

An error opened the gates and hits by Auston Zetah, Billy Statton, Jeremiah Graves and Nick Lee plus a force out sent home three.,

But Crocker came on to get the final out and blanked Bemidji the rest of the game.

Brainerd ran home four against Trevor Andrews in the fftth on a five-hit barrage including doubles by Cody Stange and Janousek.

They added three in the seventh on two walks and a pair of singles.

Veith and Janousek had two hits for Bemidji. Tyler Follis and Graves had two for Bemidji.

"Too m,any games too close together," said a disappointed Coach Mike Fogelson. "We're a much better team than we showed today. I was more displeased with the mental mistakes than the physical ones. We'll have to regroup and come back strong Monday night."

Freshman Tyler Tatro will make his second start at Grand Forks.

The game was the first sub-section contest for Brainerd. Bemidji dropped to 1-1 with games remaining against Alexandria and Moorhead.

The B Team also fell, losing 11-4 with Brainerd scoring all 11 runs in its last two at bats.

Kris Berndt held the Warriors in check through five with the Jacks leading 2-0.

But Brainerd ran home three in the sixth to go ahead and closed with an eight-run seventh.

Bemidji had only eight hits with Cody Rutledge getting three with two triples and Ernie Heifort three singles. The B Team dropped to 2-3.

Rutledge or Booster Russ will get Monday's start at Grand Forks.
