Bemidji High School swimming: Jacks have strong start in state meet preliminaries

The Bemidji Lumberjacks swim team had a banner day at the opening night of the state swim meet at University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.

Bemidji advanced both relays and Dylan Hoven in the 50 free to tonight's championship finals and will have Matt Wilcox in the consolation finals of the IM and 100 free and Tucker Asper in the 500 free.

The 200 relay of Hoven, Nick Lee, Jared Vanasse and Wilcox finished fifth in the preliminaries in 1:27.29, breaking its own school record set at the section meet last weekend and qualifying as ab All American mark this year.

The 400 relay of Asper, Lee, Vanasse and Wilcox was eighth, gaining the final spot in the championship finals. It finished at 3:15.63 and stands a good chance of moving up tonight.

Hoven took seventh in the 50 free at 21,66, also shattering the school mark of 21,95 held by Randy Kraft since 1997.

Vanasse finished 19 in 22.23, three places short of advancing.

Wilcox was ninth in the 100 free at 48.01, only 8.100 of a second shy of the top eight.

He was 12 in the IM at 1:58;83 to also reach the consolation finals.

Asper finished 12 in the 500 to join Wilcox in the second eight, timed at 4;55.47.

He failed to reach the top16 in the 200 free where he was timed at 1:47.65 to finish 19.
