BEMIDJI — The losing streak stretched to nine games Tuesday when the Bemidji girls basketball team fell 76-64 to Pequot Lakes at the BHS gym.

For much of the game, however, the Lumberjacks matched the Patriots basket for basket but a seven-minute stretch midway through the first half proved to be the difference.

During that period Pequot Lakes outscored Bemidji 20-5 and the visitors were able to turn a 9-8 deficit into a 29-13 advantage.

Guard Kayla Miller spearheaded that surge as the senior scored eight straight Patriot points on way to a 15-point night.

Teammate Vanessa Lane paced all scorers with 24 points, the vast majority of them coming from the paint.

“Our intensity was better tonight. Our energy level was high,” said BHS coach Rick Kehoe. “When you play solid defense things can get easier and for much of Tuesday’s game we were strong defensively.

“But the big difference in the game was that Pequot Lakes finished most of its plays and we didn’t.”

The teams traded the lead early in the action and Alexa Greendahl’s rebound basket gave the Jacks a 9-8 lead with 14:15 to play.

Pequot Lakes responded with its run but the Lumberjacks scored six of the first half’s final seven points to trail only 38-31 at intermission.

The Patriots stretched their advantage to 43-32 early in the second stanza but a pair of free throws by Megan Serratore and a fast-break bucket and free throw by Cheyenne Woods trimmed the deficit to 43-39.

Bemidji stayed within single digits until midway through the half when Kelsey Hart’s bucket and free throw extended Pequot Lakes’ lead to 60-49.

And the visitors were able to hang on for their 10th win in 14 starts.

Woods finished with 19 points to lead the Jacks. Palmer added 13 points.
