BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji wrestlers began a busy weekend on a positive note Friday as the Lumberjacks dumped Barnesville 39-25 in the opening match of a triangular with Barnesville and Columbia Heights.

In their second match BHS blistered Columbia Heights 65-15.

Friday’s matches served as a tune-up for the weekend’s main event -- today’s Rick Lee Invitational. Joining the Jacks, Barnesville and Columbia Heights at today’s tournament will be Aitin, Blackduck-Cass Lake-Bena, Cloquet, Greenbush, Hibbing, Nashwauk, Perham, Roseau, Royalton and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley.

The action will begin at 10 a.m. and continue through late afternoon.

Barnesville entered Friday’s meet with a 7-0 dual record and rated 11th in the state’s Class A ranks. The Lumberjacks, however, won eight matches and were awarded a forfeit victory at 160.

“Barnesville’s kids at 132, 138 and 152 had only two losses combined and were expecting to get 18 points,” said BHS coach Rance Bahr. “But we held them to only 10 points in those matches as Robert (Treuer), Lucas (Gast) and Alex (O’Neal) wrestled very well and maybe surprised Barnesville.

“We did a very good job of not giving up bonus points,” Bahr added.

The Trojans may have expected to collect some team points at 106 but Bemidji’s Chance Hinrichs recorded an escape and a takedown in the third period to post a 6-3 win.

Barnesville answered with a 2-0 win at 113 despite a great outing by Parker Beyer but BHS began to take control in the middle weights.

Indi Farris began the streak with a 15-0 technical fall in the second period of the 120-pound match and Brian Maas moved up to 126 and lived up to his No. 1 ranking at 113 with a 54-second pin.

At 132 Dylon Sauceda fell 12-2 and Treuer limited Barnesville’s Connor Meyer to a 5-1 decision at 138.

Lucas Gast gave the home team an 18-10 cushion with a 9-1 victory at 145 and, after O’Neal lost 5-2 at 152, Hunter Schoenborn was awarded a forfeit victory at 160.

Gannon Strain dominated his opponent at 170 and eventually won with a second-period pin and Nick Peterson used a late reverse to post a 6-4 victory at 182. Kade Johnson, who is rated No. 4 among the state’s Class 3A wrestlers at 182, advanced one weight to 195 and continued his dominance with a pin in 3:31.

The visitors won the final two matches as Randy Berg pinned Brody Wilander at 220 and Alex Settlemeyer pinned Wyatt Yoemans at heavyweight.

“Brody and Wyatt both gave up weight and competed very well,” Bahr said. “Considering all the lost practices and competitions we’ve had because of the weather, I thought this was a very impressive performance.

“We’ve had a great season. I wouldn’t say I’m surprised with our success but I am pleased. We have many young kids on the team and everybody is doing the job,” Bahr added.

In the win over Columbia Heights Bahr had the opportunity to give some of his younger wrestlers the opportunity to taste varsity competition and they took advantage of their opportunities, winning 10 of the matches.
