Lumberjacks: Dangerous weather conditions force officials to cancel, postpone events

BEMIDJI -- Another weekend of frigid temperatures and dangerous wind chill readings prompted activities directors in northern Minnesota to alter their athletic schedules.

The changes at Bemidji High School began Thursday night when the boys basketball team and the swimmers stayed home instead of hitting the road.

The basketball team was supposed to travel to Moorhead but that game was postponed until Feb. 11 as part of a doubleheader with the girls team. The night will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the boys contest and the girls game will follow.

Thursday’s swimming meet at Grand Rapids also was a casualty and no make-up date, if any, has been decided.

Friday’s victims included the girls basketball team which had its scheduled game at Detroit Lakes postponed to Jan. 11. The girls hockey team also fell victim to the weather as Friday’s home game against Fergus Falls was postponed.

Another three Saturday events were pushed back or cancelled on Friday afternoon. The ski teams were supposed to participate at the Alexandria Invitational but that meet has been scrubbed. The swimmers also had their trip to the Detroit Lakes Invitational cancelled and, as is the case with Thursday’s dual at Grand Rapids, a make-up date is yet to be decided.

Bemidji’s gymnasts also saw their action at the Park Rapids Invitational moved to Jan. 18.

Saturday’s schedule includes the BSU-Northern Michigan hockey rematch and home basketball games against Upper Iowa. Also at home Saturday is the BHS boys hockey game against Sartell (2 p.m.) while the girls basketball team will head to Cloquet and the wrestlers will travel to Buffalo where the Jacks will compete in four dual matches.
