BOYS HOCKEY: Bemidji falls in overtime again

THIEF RIVER FALLS - The Bemidji High School boys hockey team has lost three of its five games this winter but with a different bounce here and a slightly different angle on a shot there, the Lumberjacks could be 5-0.

Thursday at Thief River Falls the Jacks dropped their third overtime decision of the season when they fell 3-2. So far this year BHS has been involved in four one-goal games and three of them have been overtime setbacks.

The exceptions are a 6-1 win over St. Cloud Apollo to open the campaign and a 4-3 win over Warroad in regulation.

In Thursday’s contest Bemidji spotted the Prowlers the opening goal when Keaton Huot beat BHS goaltender Grant Tharaldson at the 9:36 mark of the first period.

A minute later the Lumberjacks tied the score courtesy of Noah Burn’s power play goal. Sam Carlson and Sam Bruestle assisted on the tally.

BHS was awarded another power play later in the stanza and the Jacks made the most of the opportunity as Rocky Copiskey connected with help from Nick Leitner at 14:32.

Bemidji took the 2-1 lead into the period break and held the advantage through a scoreless second stanza.

The Lumberjacks maintained that lead late into the third period but Thief River Falls eventually scored the equalizer when Logan Ose found the net with a rebound at 13:36 while the Prowlers were on the power play.

In the overtime session both teams generated scoring opportunities but Tharaldson and TRF goalie Tanner Holmes stood up to the pressure. About six minutes into the extra time, however, the Prowlers (3-3) notched the game-winner when Ian Lund pounced on a rebound and beat Tharaldson.

Bemidji’’s offense generated 29 shots while Tharaldson made 21 saves in 24 chances.

The Lumberjacks will return home 3 p.m. Saturday and host Monticello. Saturday’s contest will be the final home appearance for BHS until Jan. 4.
