BOYS HOCKEY: Bemidji edges Warroad 4-3 with late goal
WARROAD — Jake Leitner score a hat trick and assisted on Brent Isensee’s eventual game-winning goal late in the third period as the Bemidji High School boys’ hockey team topped Warroad 4-3 Tuesday night.
After losing losing their last two games in overtime (against Moorhead and Grand Rapids), head coach Wade Chiodo is glad the Lumberjacks (2-2) finally pulled out a close one this time around.
“It was good to find a way to win a close game at the end,” Chiodo said. “It’s good momentum for our team and our program to finally get some steam.”
The Lumberjacks took a 3-1 lead into the third period but the Warriors (4-2) scored twice midway through the third to tie it up with goals from Max Oelkers and Kyle Sylvester.
Despite playing what Chido called a sloppy third period Bemidji regrouped from that and took advantage of a late power-play opportunity to win the game.
With less than two minutes to go, Leitner fed Isensee, who knocked home what turned out to be the game-winner on the man-advantage.
“It was nice to get that one,” Chido said. “We’d been struggling on the power play recently so it was a good confidence boost for us.”
The Warriors pulled their goalie and had a few dramatic tries to end the game but the Lumberjacks held on for the victory.
Leitner scored three times for BHS earlier in the game. He had an unassisted tally in the first period and two more in the second period, including a shorthanded goal.
Garrett Atteberry notched his first win in goal for the Lumberjacks.
Warroad outshot Bemidji 42-26 but Atteberry made 39 saves to help BHS preserve the win. Alex Burke stopped 22 shots for the Warriors.
Bemidji returns to action Thursday at Thief River Falls.
