ST. CLOUD — Sartell scored single goals in each period and hung on for a 3-1 victory over the Bemidji High School girls hockey team Friday in the opening round of the St. Cloud Cathedral tournament.

Sylvia Grimm tallied for the Lumberjacks (2-5) who will meet the host team at 2:30 today’s second round.

The game was scoreless until late in the first period when Sartell’s Caitlin Halupczok beat BHS goalie Leighton Rockensock at the 12:38 mark.

Grimm tied the game 4:30 into the second when she attacked with Savanna Hanson and banged home a rebound.

“Sylvia has been working hard and is earning more ice time,” said BHS assistant coach Kailee Jaeger. “And her hard work is resulting in some goals.”

The Sabres scored a game-breaker when Ahna Richardson connected on a power play with one second to play in the middle period.

The Jacks dominated the play in the stanza, outshooting Sartell 14-4, and continued to hold a territorial edge in the third period.

Sartell, however, scored the only goal in the final session when Amanda Flemming tallied seven minutes into the period.

“It took us until the second half of the game to get going,” Jaeger said. “Hopefully we’ll be ready to go Saturday.”

Rockensock finished with 19 saves.

Friday’s game was the first of four straight road games. After today’s contest BHS will visit Detroit Lakes on Dec. 3 and Grand Rapids on Dec. 5.
