BOYS HOCKEY: Thunderhawks score late to tip Lumberjacks 4-3 in OT

GRAND RAPIDS — Grand Rapids forced overtime with a goal in the final 11 seconds and tallied the game-winner 29 seconds into the extra period to nip the Bemidji boys hockey team 4-3 Tuesday in Grand Rapids.

The Lumberjacks led much of the way but the Thunderhawks eventually tied the game with a controversial goal in the waning seconds of regulation. Grand Rapids put the puck on the Bemidji net and the Thunderhawks all converged on the crease. The pressure eventually pushed BHS goalie Gabe Heifort past the crease, according to the officials who awarded Grand Rapids the tying goal.

Only 29 seconds into the overtime the Thunderhawks notched the game-winner when Jonah Bischoff found a crease and scored.

“There were two evenly matched teams and the action was back and forth,” said Bemidji coach Wade Chiodo. “I’m proud of the kids. They put their heart and soul into the game and, unfortunately, there was an apparent missed call that affected the outcome.”

The Lumberjacks opened the scoring early in the game when Brett Hartje scored an unassisted tally. Grand Rapids tied the game midway through the period, however.

Jack Johnson gave Bemidji a 2-1 lead early in the second stanza when he converted a rebound and the Jacks maintained the cushion the rest of the period.

Avery Peterson knotted the score five minutes into the third session but Brett Isensee gave the Jacks a 3-2 advantage with a power play marker at the 13-minute mark.

That goal set the stage for the wild finish.

Heifort finished with 16 saves.

Bemidji (1-1) is off until Dec. 5 when it hosts Moorhead.
