t 15 shots on net in the second period of a 3-1 win over the Bemidji girls hockey team Friday at the Bemidji Community Arena.

Each team had a power play opportunity in the opening period but neither team was able to capitalize.

The Lumberjacks outshot the Prowlers eight-to-five in the scoreless period.

“Our girls had a good game on Tuesday and they came out of the gates with the same energy,” Bemidji head coach Jackie Robertson said.

Sylvia Marolt ended the stretch of scoreless hockey as she put TRF ahead with 12:33 remaining in the second period. Brandi Malwitz and Kora Torkelson picked up assists on the goal.

Five minutes later the Prowlers doubled their lead to 2-0 thanks to a goal from Emily Bergland that floated over the glove of Bemidji goaltender Leighton Rockensock and into the net.

“It starts in the offensive zone,” Robertson said. “One little thing just falls apart and it leads to another. When it is against a good team like Thief River Falls, they capitalize on it.”

The Lumberjacks answered with a goal of their own when Hanna Olson’s shot from just in front of the blue line snuck past Thief River Falls goaltender Frances Marshall.

“It was huge,” Robertson said of the goal. “Being in the locker room down one goal is a lot better than being down two goals, but either way our girls are going to come out playing hard in the third period.”

TRF fired 15 shots on net in the second period and took a 2-1 lead into the third period.

The Lumberjacks were unable to convert on their third power play of the night and Torkelson added an empty net goal in the final minute for the Prowlers.

Rockensock made 20 of her 25 saves in the final two periods.

“She did an awesome job tonight,” Robertson said of her goaltender.

“She had a few hard saves to make and we were glad to have her in the net.”

Marshall stopped 21 saves.
