SWIMMING: Bemidji wins section title again

BEMIDJI —  The Bemidji High School girls swimming and diving team will celebrate a section title.

The Lumberjacks ran away with Section 8A title Saturday, scoring 438 points to take first place in the 10-team section field. It’s Bemidji’s third-straight section title.

In addition to their big team victory, the Lumberjacks had five individuals and two relay teams qualify for next weekend’s state meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.

The top two individuals in each race, the top two relay teams and the top four divers all make state tournament.

Two BHS relay teams — the 200 freestyle and the 400 freestyle — won their races to advance to state.

The 200 relay team of Morgan Williams, Erin Arndt, Danielle Hoven and Libby McRae easily won their race with a time of 1:42.26 — more than three seconds faster than the second place finisher.

The 400 relay team, which featured the same swimmers as the 200 team, also won with a time of 3:46.29.

Individually, five swimmers qualified for state.

Arndt won the 200-meter individual medley race with a time of 2 minutes, 18:26 seconds to advance to state, as did Williams in the 200 freestyle. She clocked in at 2:03.50.

In the diving competition, Kylei Grosfield won with a final score of 442.80 to advance to the state competition.

Hoven took second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.35.

Libby McRae took first place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:26.87.
