MOORHEAD — There will be a new Class 3A, Section 8 volleyball champion, as Moorhead topped two-time defending section champion Bemidji 25-20, 22-25, 26-24, 25-23 Tuesday in the section semifinals at Moorhead.

“It was a game of jitters,” Moorhead coach Char Lien said. “They just had to relax and go out there do what they needed to do. When they did that, you could see that they knew it was tournament time.”

The Lumberjacks (15-14) had swept their rival Spuds earlier this season — way back on Sept. 5.

This time around, things were a bit different.

In the first set the Spuds went up 19-14 only to see the Jacks fight back and cut the lead to 19-18 until finally pulling out a 25-20 victory.

In the second set, the Jacks won 25-22 but the Spuds rallied to take the next two sets — including a comeback 25-24 victory in the third set after trailing 23-21.

Moorhead closed the match on a 7-2 run to win the game.

“It could have gone either way,” Bemidji coach Teresa Colligan said. “It was a hard-fought game. Both teams came out to play tonight. We were able to give a nice showing, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough.”

The Spuds (17-11) will take on top-seeded Alexandria Friday for the right to return to the state tournament.

The Cardinals swept the Spuds two days before Bemidji did in September and topped the Spuds 2-1 at the Eagle Invitational later that month.

Moorhead hasn’t won a section title since 2010 — Bemidji has won the last two, in 2011 and 2012.
