GIRLS SOCCER: Bemidji's season ends with 4-1 loss to Elk River

ELK RIVER — After playing 63 minutes of solid soccer, the Bemidji High School girls soccer team couldn’t overcome late goals by Elk River.

The Elks scored three goals in the final 15 minutes of the game and won their Section 8-2A first-round playoff game 4-1.

“I thought we played a great game,” BHS head coach Kelly Schoonover said. “We worked very hard but those last 15 minutes they got a couple in behind us and we couldn’t catch up.”

The Lumberjacks scored the game’s first goal just eight minutes in. Maea Wall got the goal with an assist from Abby Lindseth.

That, said Schoonover, helped give them some confidence.

“We came out with a lot of intensity,” she said. “To score first, that was huge for us. It was a real boost to our momentum.”

At the 16-minute mark, Elk River’s Logan Daulton answered with the equalizer.

Despite that, the Lumberjacks didn’t break.

It wasn’t until the second half that the Elks (8-6-3) got going.

Daulton scored her second goal — the eventual game-winner — at the 64 minute mark, deflecting in a ball that was up in the air near the box.

Three minutes later Erin Ness beat BHS goalkeeper Casey Palmer to make it 3-1.

Then, with just a minute left to play in the game and the Jacks pressing on a corner kick to try and get a desperation score, Monet Cairns picked up a loose ball and had an easy breakaway goal to make it 4-1.

In all the Lumberjacks had six shots goal to Elk River’s 20. Palmer finished the game with 16 saves while Elk River keeper Alyse Grunewald had five saves.
