Boys soccer: Bemidji's offense sputters in loss to EGF

BEMIDJI – Earlier this fall the Bemidji boys soccer team posted a 2-1 victory at East Grand Forks and Lumberjacks coach Rick Toward was expecting a similar contest Monday when the teams squared off at the middle school field.

The Green Wave duplicated its first-game offensive output when Damian Brooks scored with 2:15 to play in regulation. The Lumberjacks, however, never found the net and East Grand Forks headed west with a 1-0 victory.

“I thought we would score,” Toward said.”I can’t believe we didn’t score. We certainly had plenty of opportunities.

Neither team scored until the final seconds of regulation when Cale Mack dribbled deep into the zone and sent a pass through the crease to Brooks who was unguarded outside the left post.

Brooks did the rest as his shot beat BHS keeper Matt Bitter for what proved to be the game’s lone score.

The Jacks forced EGF goalie Brandon Johnson to make eight saves and also spoiled a handful of golden opportunities by missing the target with their shots.

Monday’s game was Bemidji’s eighth in 16 days and Toward believes that his players could use some rest.

“We didn’t play with the intensity that we have had during our last few games,” the coach said. “I’m not making any excuses but for the past 10 days it’s been game and practice — game and practice — game and practice, and I think we’re tired.

“It was obvious that we weren’t mentally ready on Monday,” the coach added.

Bemidji will have a few days to recover as the Jacks are off until Oct. 4 when they head to Moorhead. The regular season will end Oct. 7 at home against Hillcrest Lutheran.
