BOYS SOCCER: Sartell edges Bemidji 1-0

BEMIDJI — Whenever Sartell and Bemidji meet in boys soccer, you can bet it’s going to be a close game.

Three of the last four games the teams have played have been close, and Saturday was no different as Sartell edged Bemidji 1-0 on a wet field at the middle school field.

Kyle Erickson scored the game’s lone goal, knocking the ball in after it bounced off several other players in front of the Bemidji net at the 53:12 mark, said Jacks coach Rick Toward.

That was the only ball that got past senior goalie Matt Bitter. “He made some nice plays today,” Toward said. “We gave up a lot of corner kicks in this game, and he was able to either get a hand on the ball or get in front.”

Bitter had 9 saves in the game, as did Sartell goalie Colin Johnson.

Sartell improved to 10-2-1, while the Jacks now are at 5-5-3 on the season. Earlier last week, Bemidji tied Moorhead on Monday and defeated Crookston 5-0 on Thursday. Up next is East Grand Forks, at 5:30 p.m. at the middle school field. Bemidji got its first win of the season in a 2-1 win at East Grand Forks earlier this year.

“We have made some big improvements since that EGF game, and I am sure they have, too, but it will be a good game and we need to get back in the win column,” Toward said.
