BOYS SOCCER: Jacks top EGF for first win of season

EAST GRAND FORKS -- Bemidji trailed East Grand Forks 1-0 at halftime Thursday night but Lumberjacks boys soccer coach Rick Toward knew that his team did not have to make any major adjustments to overtake the Green Wave.

"This was a very physical contest, it was a hard field and we were playing into the wind in the first half," Toward said. "Much of the play was spent in our end but at half we told the kids that this game wasn't going to be pretty and if we wanted to win we would have to outwork East Grand.

"And we did."

The extra effort was rewarded with goals by Louis Iaquinto at 58:36 and Leo Spry nine minutes later and those tallies gave BHS a 2-1 victory.

After Spry's goal, Toward altered his lineup to stress defense and the Lumberjacks (1-3-1) allowed only one Green Wave shot the rest of the way. And that shot was wide of the net.

Bemidji yielded a goal by Bale Mack 22 minutes into the game but dodged a bullet when East Grand Forks misfired on a penalty kick 90 seconds into the action.

After intermission, however, the Jacks dominated the play and the extra effort resulted in the team's first win of the fall.

"A lack of effort will never be rewarded and we had to play harder in the second half," Toward said. "We did play harder and we were rewarded.

"Now we can look forward to our rematch with Detroit Lakes Monday at home."
