SOCCER: Bemidji rally falls short; Detroit Lakes wins 3-1

DETROIT LAKES -- After rallying from a 1-0 halftime deficit, the Bemidji boys soccer team had its chances but couldn't keep pace with Detroit Lakes.

The Lakers scored two late goals to claim a 3-1 victory over the Lumberjacks Tuesday night.

"A mistake cost us that second goal," BHS head coach Rick Toward said. "We talked about it at halftime but we didn't fix the problem well enough."

After Detroit Lakes' Johnathan Hallisey scored the first goal of the game with 2 minutes left before half, the Lumberjacks got the equalizer just a minute into the second half. Alex Schussman took a corner kick and got it to Caleb Hess, who tallied his first-ever varsity goal to even the score.

But although the Lumberjacks were playing well on putting lots of pressure on the Detroit Lakes goal in the second half, the Lakers found a hole in the BHS midfield and defense and exploited it.

DL's Brady Crawford received a long throw in and outran the BHS defense. Eventually the speedy Lakers forward had a 1-on-1 with BHS goalie Bruno Cheney and beat him with a shot to the lower-left corner.

The Lakers scored their third goal with three minutes to go in the game on a free kick. The Lumberjacks were pressing but were whistled for a foul and Ben Thompson scored from 20 yards out to seal the game.

"We're still a little young," Toward said. "You don't want to use that as an excuse but our objective here is to have these younger players learn from their mistakes.

"We don't want to make these kinds of mistakes into a trend. But it's early and we have some time."

The Lumberjacks, who fall to 0-3-0, are off for a week before returning to action next Tuesday when they'll host Grand Rapids.

Detroit Lakes improves to 2-1-0 on the season.
