HOCKEY: WCHA teams to promote concussion awareness

BEMIDJI -- Western Collegiate Hockey Association men’s and women’s hockey players will partner with the Headway Foundation to promote concussion awareness by wearing helmet stickers this weekend. The National Collegiate Hockey Conference and ECAC Hockey will also participate in the initiative to promote a “New Tough” and change attitudes about concussions.

“Hockey players are lauded for being ‘tough,’ but it is imperative that student-athletes know that this does NOT mean risking serious brain injury,” WCHA commissioners Bill Robertson and Katie Million said in a joint statement. “Student-athletes – in any sport – need to be applauded and supported for having the strength to recognize and report possible concussion symptoms.”

Fans will also be able to pledge a donation for every goal their favorite WCHA team scores, with all funds going directly to support the New Tough Campaign. To pledge, visit: http://headwayfoundation.com/2018goalschallenge/.
