WOMEN’S HOCKEY: Third-period spark lifts Beavers over Bulldogs
DULUTH -- The Bemidji State women’s hockey team turned in a solid effort in the third period Friday against Duluth, scoring four goals on the way to a 5-3 comeback win over the Bulldogs at AMSOIL Arena.
The win lifts the Beavers (12-11-2, 7-7-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) to a six-point lead over Duluth (9-12-1, 5-9-1 WCHA) in fourth place in the WCHA standings.
The Bulldogs opened Friday night’s scoring with two goals in the second period from Ryleigh Houston and Jessica Healey before BSU sophomore Abby Halluska cut the lead in half in the final minute of the middle frame.
Still down 2-1 with 20 minutes left, though, the Beavers still had work to do.
The third period started with a Jacqueline Kaasa goal at the 5 minute, 46 second mark, and Bailey Wright scored a goal of her own soon after to claim the first Bemidji State lead.
Clair DeGeorge stretched that lead to 4-2 with a tally at the 11:19 mark, answered by UMD’s Jessica healey at 13:17.
Finally, Reilly Faucett, the Proctor native, locked the game up with a goal with 15 seconds left for the 5-3 win.
BSU’s Lauren Bench made 32 saves on the night, and the Beavers racked up a respectable 38 shots on the UMD net.
The two teams rematch for the series finale at 4:07 this afternoon at AMSOIL Arena. The game will be televised on Fox Sports North Plus.
