BEMIDJI -- Alexis Joyce and Mak Langei of the Bemidji State women’s hockey team received Western Collegiate Hockey Association monthly awards Wednesday.
Joyce, a senior defender, was named WCHA Defensive Player of the Month and Langei, a freshman defender, took home WCHA Rookie of the Month honors for December. The monthly awards are the first in both players’ careers.

The Lakeville native also posted the best plus-minus in the league with a plus-9 rating and blocked eight shots and while helping the Beavers keep opponents to only 1.67 goals per game.
Langei also made her presence felt on both ends of the ice for the Beavers, who ended December by matching a program-record five-straight wins. The East Grand Forks native led the WCHA with five assists last month, while her six points matched Joyce for the WCHA and NCAA scoring lead among blueliners. Langei tied for third in the WCHA with 12 blocked shots and led league rookies with a plus-6 rating, which tied for the second-best mark overall.
