GIRLS GOLF: Jacks swing into second at Staples
STAPLES -- The Bemidji High School girls golf team edged out all but Detroit Lakes at The Vintage Golf Course in Staples on Saturday, earning a second-place finish at the Cardinal Invitational.
“Things went well today,” BHS head coach Paul Daman said. “The course we play in Staples is a harder course probably than we play most of the year. There’s a lot of water hazards, a lot of trouble, so kids have to do a lot more thinking to navigate their way around that place. My goal was to break 340 down there today, and we shot 339, so I thought overall it was a good day.”
The Lumberjacks’ team score of 339 was good for second in the 16-team field, while the Lakers eked out first with a 331 finish.
Abbie Kelm carded a 77 on the 72-par course to lead BHS, landing her fourth on the leaderboard out of 83 individuals.
“Abbie Kelm shot 77, and she’s just been rock-steady,” Daman said. “...She’s just been really someone that the whole team can depend on.”
Taylor Offerdahl and Damaris Berg followed by shooting an 84 and 85, respectively, while Nicki Son and Tatum Offerdahl tied for fourth on the team with a 93. Kylen Fensen also carded a 96 on the day to round out the Bemidji finishers.
“Probably the bright spot of the last two days was, (Friday) Tatum Offerdahl shot an 85, and (Saturday) Damaris Berg shot an 85… Those are their best scores. When you start to have your kids shoot their best scores a little bit later in the season, it starts to get you excited that maybe their best is yet to come still.”
Eva Laituri (98), Nettie Kimball (106), Rylie Jones (108) and Emma Alexander (116) also competed on the Bemidji II team, finishing with a combined score of 428.
Alayna Eldred of Osakis earned medalist honors by four strokes with an even 72, which included a 34 on the front nine. Outside the top two team spots, meanwhile, Alexandria took third with a score of 343, Minnewaska followed in fourth at 350, and Staples-Motley landed in the top five with a 358.
Bemidji will return to the links at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, at the Brainerd Invitational.
