FOOTBALL: Ames named NSIC Defensive Player of the Week
BEMIDJI -- Sophomore linebacker Gabe Ames has been named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in Bemidji State’s season-opening win over Northern State. The award is the program’s first Defensive Player of the Week honor since 2016.
The 2017 All-NSIC First Team member led the nation in forced fumbles and led the conference in tackles for a loss.
Ames, a native of Rosemount, led the nation with two forced fumbles and set a career high with 13 tackles in BSU’s 38-17 win Thursday, Aug. 30. He led the NSIC with 3.0 tackles for a loss of 17 yards, while his 13 total tackles ranked third in the league.
Bemidji State’s most recent NSIC Defensive Player of the Week had been Damon Benham who was recognized Sept. 19, 2016, after recording two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, and four tackles.
Ames and the Beavers will travel for their second game of the season Saturday, Sept. 8, at the University of Mary. The Beavers will face their former offensive coordinator Craig Bagnell, who is now the head coach of the Marauders, at 2 p.m. in Bismarck, N.D.
