MEN'S BASKETBALL: Late 3-pointer lifts Concordia to win 85-84 win over Bemidji State

ST. PAUL – Cordell Smith’s 3-pointer with four seconds remaining proved to be the game-winner as Concordia-St. Paul nipped Bemidji State 85-84 in men’s basketball Saturday.

BSU’s Dermaine Crockrell got off a clear 3-point shot at the basket before the buzzer, but it rimmed out.

Bemidji was aiming for a weekend sweep after knocking off No. 5-ranked Minnesota State Mankato on Friday night.

Both teams got off to a hot start by scoring 15 points each in the first six minutes of play.

A pair of 3-pointers from Jake Schalow and Mason Walters fueled an 8-0 run to give the Beavers a 24-19 lead with 11:20 left in the first half.

Walters led all scorers with 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting.

BSU’s lead was as big as seven points at 32-25 with 7:50 remaining in the half.

The Golden Bears answered with a 10-3 run to even the score at 35 and the score remained within three points for the remainder of the half.

BSU led 50-47 at the half. The first half was its second consecutive half scoring more than 50 points after scoring 51 in the second half last night in Mankato.

The Beavers dominated the Golden Bears in the first five minutes of the second half as they earned a 14-4 advantage to build a 64-51 lead.

Concordia inched back for the next 10 minutes until Terez VanPelt’s layup gave it its first lead at 76-75 with 5:35 left in the game.

After trailing 80-79, Walters and Maxie Rosenbloom scored the next five points to put BSU ahead 84-80 with less than a minute remaining.

Rosenbloom finished with 14 points on 7-9 shooting.

Nick Mabbutt made a layup to cut the lead in half and DJ Lewis stole the ball from Crockrell with 12 seconds left to set up Smith’s go-ahead shot.

Smith finished with 21 points on 8-11 shooting and made five shots from behind the arc.

Isaiah Thomas led the Golden Bears with 22 points on 7-9 shooting and made six of his eight three-point attempts.

Concordia made 12 of its 21 three-point shots.
