Beavers welcome new signees

BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji State men’s hockey team announced the additions of two players during the early signing period Tuesday.

Nicholas Cardelli, a forward from Bloomingdale, Ill., and Darby Gula, a defenseman from Steinbach, Manitoba, signed with the program and plan to begin their college careers in the fall of 2018.

Cardelli is currently playing for the Fargo Force in his first full season in the United States Hockey League. Playing in six of 14 games for Fargo, Cardelli is in search of his first point and has recorded 12 shots on goal.

Prior to this season, Cardelli played for the Brookings Blizzard of the North American Hockey League. In 59 appearances during the 2016-17 season, Cardelli had 20 goals and 33 assists for 53 points to rank second on the team and among the top 30 scorers in the league.

Gula is in his fourth season with the Steinbach Pistons of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

In 19 games, the alternate captain has 26 points on five goals and 21 assists and ranks as the MJHL’s top scoring defenseman. His 21 assists is just six fewer than a career-high set in 56 games in 2016-17 and is currently good for second on the team and third in the league.

Gula finished the 2016-17 season with 34 points (7g-27a) in 56 games for the Pistons before leading the team to the playoffs where he added a pair of assists in 12 postseason games.
