Bemidji State officials waiting for an answer on basketball coach job

BEMIDJI - The process of hiring a new men's basketball coach at Bemidji State University continues but BSU athletic director Rick Goeb hopes to officially announce the new coach "very soon."

"There is no timetable, Goeb said Thursday. "We are working with the candidates. The process is continuing and we are moving forward."

The new coach will replace Matt Bowen who resigned earlier this summer to accept the head coaching position at Minnesota-Duluth.

Goeb said that BSU officials have offered the coaching position to one of the three leading candidates.

"We have made an offer but what is slowing the process is waiting for the correspondence. We want to make the announcement of a new coach as fast as possible but we are waiting for him to respond either positively or negatively (to the offer)."

The original pool of candidates was reduced to four men who came to BSU during the middle of June for lengthy interviews. Shortly after the interviews were conducted, one of the candidates, Austin Hansen of South Dakota State, notified Goeb that he no longer wanted to be considered.

The three remaining candidates are:

* Al Biancalana, an associate head coach at the University of Illinois-Chicago;

* Mike Boschee, the men's basketball coach at Central College in Pella, Iowa, and;

* Jeff Hironaka, an assistant coach at Washington State University.

Biancalana's duties included coaching, individual development, recruiting and community service.

Boschee's resume includes a 53-26 record over the past three seasons, an Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title and a trip to the NCAA Division III national tournament.

During Hironaka's tenure at Washington State the team has had three All-PAC 12 players and a conference freshman of the year. He has also been the head coach at Division II Seattle Pacific University, where he led them to the national semifinals in 2006.

"We were very impressed with the pool of candidates," Goeb said. "Matt (Bowen) did a great job of making (the BSU men's basketball) position more attractive and the name Bemidji State University is well known in the (collegiate basketball circles)."
