BSU's Braun named to all-America squad

MARSHALL, Minn. -- Bemidji State sophomore catcher Zach Braun was named to the 2012 Daktronics NCAA Division II Baseball All-America Second Team. He is the first BSU baseball player to earn an All-America award from Daktronics and was one of three sophomores on the first, second or third teams.

Members of the NCAA Division II College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selected the All-America teams, sponsored by Daktronics.

Braun is the first player under head coach Tim Bellew to earn All-America honors in the coach's seven seasons at BSU.

Braun was also named to the 2012 Daktronics All-Central Region First Team, Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Central Region First Team, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-Central Region First Team and All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference First Team.

The catcher took the Beavers' batting title in just his second season in the green and white. His .391 batting average placed him fifth in the NSIC. His .578 slugging percentage tied with junior Logan Kalis for the team-lead and ranked 13th in the league, while his .477 on-base percentage was fifth in the conference.

In 128 at-bats he recorded 50 hits, 32 RBIs, 28 runs scored, nine doubles, five home runs and 74 total bases

He drew 16 walks and was 3-for-4 on stolen base attempts on the season. He was also named NSIC Player of the Week May 1.

In 24 starts he recorded 143 putouts behind the plate, with six assists and six errors for a .961 fielding percentage. He caught four runners stealing.

Other NSIC players on the list include third baseman Bryan Lippincott of Concordia-St. Paul (first team), outfielder Phil Imholte of St. Cloud State (third team) and starting pitcher Derek Hansen of Augustana (third team).
