Beavers drop pair to Southwest
BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader Saturday at home to SMSU to open its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
The Beavers lost the opener 8-0 and dropped the nightcap 5-4.
The Mustangs scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to claim the second game.
The two losses dropped Bemidji State to 6-11 while SMSU improved to 11-7.
In Saturday's opener, the Beavers and Mustangs were engaged in a pitcher's duel for the first five innings as BSU's Kelsey Saralampi and Rachel Hoeppner both controlled the game.
The Mustangs led 1-0 but took control with three in the fifth.
SMSU added four more runs to go ahead 8-0 in the top of the sixth inning.
In game two, the Beavers got off to a quick start as Courtney Anderson took down Southwest Minnesota State in order in the top of the first. The Beaver bats responded in the bottom of the second inning. Crystal Bowen led off the inning with a single down the third base line. She advanced to third after Kelly Richards reached on an error by the first baseman. Bowen and Richards were both plated on a Courtney Loegering double. Loegering scored as Summer Monsrud singled.
Bemidji State ended the inning with three runs on three hits.
The Mustangs, trailing 4-3, responded with the tying and winning runs in the top of the seventh, however.
Anderson went the distance on the mound.
BSU hosts Minnesota State today in a twinbill starting at noon.
