Beavers hold on for win against St. Cloud State in women's hockey

A goal by Lauren Williams in the third period proved to be the game-winner as Bemidji State held on for a 3-2 win over St. Cloud State in women's Western Collegiate Hockey Association action on Friday at the National Hockey Center.

Williams gave the Beavers a 3-1 lead midway through the second period on a quick shot from the left circle. The goal was assisted by Kristen Huber and Kimberly Lieder.

Bemidji State snapped a winless streak in the first game of a WCHA series dating back to Oct. 21 when the Beavers beat St. Cloud State at the Sanford Center.

St. Cloud State (5-26-2, 4-23-0 WCHA) cut the lead to 3-2 merely 17 seconds later on a goal by Molli Mott. Kylie Lane and Sydney Burghardt picked up assists on the goal for the Huskies.

All the scoring in the second period came in a three-minute span.

Neither team registered a goal in the third period. The Beavers outshot the Huskies 38-28 in the game.

Senior goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova recorded 26 saves for Bemidji State.

St. Cloud State's Julie Friend made 35 saves.

The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period when junior captain Jocelyn Zabrick picked up her fourth goal of the season.

Callie Dahl and Ellie Sitek added assists on the play.

Bemidji State (16-15-3, 10-15-2 WCHA) knotted the score at 1-1 while St. Cloud State was on the power play. Sadie Lundquist skated the length of the ice and scored a shorthanded, unassisted goal.

Kimberly Lieder gave the Beavers their first lead of the game seven minutes into the second period.

Lieder's goal came on the power play and was assisted by Huber and Mackenzie Thurston.

Bemidji State finished the game 1-for-3 on the power play while the Huskies went 0-for-4.

Bemidji State finishes the series against St. Cloud State today in the WCHA regular season finale at 2:07 p.m. at the National Hockey Center. St. Cloud State will be honoring three seniors before the game.
