Bemidji State men's hockey: Bakala earns weekly WCHA honor

Bemidji State senior goalie Dan Bakala was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association WCHA Defensive Player of the Week by the league on Tuesday.

Bakala stopped 52 of the 55 shots he faced in last weekend's sweep over then No. 10 Colorado College at the Sanford Center.

The Calgary, Alberta native had 29 saves in Friday's 4-2 victory and 23 saves in Saturday's 4-1 victory.

Bakala is 6-1-1 in his last eight starts and has 125 saves in the last four games. He is 9-7-2 on the year with a .919 save percentage and 2.48 goals against average.

The WCHA laurel marks the first of the season for Bakala and the fifth occasion the league has selected a member of the BSU hockey program for its weekly honor in 2011-12.

Goalie Andrew Walsh was named as the league's Defensive Player of the Week Oct. 26, and was the WCHA Rookie of the Week Dec. 13 and 20. Brad Hunt was the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 6.

Minnesota-Duluth forward Jack Connolly was the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week and Denver's Scott Mayfield was the WCHA Rookie of the Week.

Bemidji State (15-12-3, 9-10-3 WCHA) faces No. 7 Minnesota (19-12-1, 15-8-0 WCHA) at Mariucci Arena this weekend. Game times Friday and Saturday are 7:07 p.m.
