Minnesota-Crookston downs Beavers in close volleyball match

CROOKSTON, Minn. -- Minnesota-Crookston turned back Bemidji?State 25-22, 20-25, 25-19 Saturday in college volleyball.

Bemidji State fell to 6-20 (3-15 NSIC). The Golden Eagles improved to 12-16 (6-16 NSIC).

Junior Bethany Thompson paced the Beavers with 18 kills, while teammates Kelsi Crawford and Rachel Craig, who played together at Wadena-Deer Creek, added double-figure kills with 12 and 11, respectively. Kimberly Hacker hit .318 for the match and had eight kills. Setter Jessi-Beth McCannell finished with 49 assists.

Elissa Christensen had a career-high 24 digs for the Beavers and helped hold the Golden Eagles to a .162 hitting percentage. Bemidji State held a stronger hitting percentage on the afternoon, hitting .215. Courtney Volkmann added 15 digs. Craig added four block assists for the match.

Brittany Looker led the Golden Eagles with 17 kills while Danielle Rueter and Abby Cleveland each had 10. Kelsey Matykowski paced Minnesota, Crookston with 14 digs.

Defensively, libero Chelsea Wiesner led the way with 22 digs while Looker added eight. Morgan VanGerpen paced the Golden Eagles with eight block assists as Minnesota, Crookston finished with 12.5 blocks on the night.

The Beavers will return home for their final matches of the season as they host Minnesota State University, Mankato and Southwest Minnesota State University next weekend.
