Beavers unable to slow down undefeated Golden Bears
No. 1 ranked Concordia-St. Paul was too much for the Bemidji State volleyball team Tuesday night at BSU Gymnasium.
The four-time defending national champion Golden Bears defeated the Beavers 3-0 by game scores of 25-11, 25-11 and 25-15.
BSU drops to 4-14 (1-9 NSIC) with the loss and Concordia improved to an undefeated 19-0 (10-0 NSIC).
The Golden Bears outhit the Beavers .424 to .146 on the night with 49 kills, 10 errors and 92 attempts. BSU had 25 kills, 12 errors and 89 attempts.
The Beavers struggled in the first two games but came out and hit .267 in the final game.
Bethany Thompson paced the Beavers with seven kills and hit .217 on the match. Kimberly Hacker added six kills and Kelly Niles had four kills.
At setter, Jessi-Beth McCannell and Courtney Volkmann split time with Volkmann playing the entire second game.
Both Volkmann and Elissa Christensen earned their first starts on the night with the Beaver changing their starting lineup for the first time this season.
Laura Carlson led BSU defensively with 10 digs.
2011 NSIC Preseason Player of the Year Megan Carlson led Concordia with 12 kills and 15 digs.
The Beavers have now lost the last 21 matches to the Golden Bears dating back to Nov. 2, 2001.
The Beavers will face Winona State and Upper Iowa in road matches this weekend. It will be the first matches for the Beavers against unranked teams since Sept. 30.
BSU has played six of its last seven games against nationally ranked opponents.
